Making Rights Real marks year of success with new report

A charity that helps people living in Scotland challenge human rights violations is marking a year of success with a new report.

A Year of Making Rights Real’ contains contributions from grassroots community groups from Edinburgh, Wick, Perth, Cupar and Pitlochry, who shared their experiences of using human rights to challenge poor housing conditions, inaccessible healthcare, disability discrimination, racism and the cost-of-living crisis.

Making Rights Real was established in 2020 as a grassroots human rights organisation for Scotland with a big vision- human rights for all. It does do this by delivering education, empowerment and capacity building sessions on human rights; art, theatre and creative activities to build confidence and promote wellbeing; and supporting community groups to amplify their voices and increase their participation in decisions that matter to them.

MRR director Clare MacGillivray said: “We are incredibly proud of what our small team has achieved, walking side by side with communities who are living with human rights violations, and being led by what is most important to them.

“There is still so much to do – to bring housing up to the legal tolerable standard, to ensure healthcare is accessible and that the rights of young people are upheld. Change has to happen now for the people who need it most.”
