New Gorbals Housing Association celebrates Volunteers Week 2025

New Gorbals Housing Association (NGHA) hosted a special lunch on Wednesday 4 June 2025 in recognition of the volunteers who give up their time and effort to benefit the Association and Gorbals community.
More than 50 local Gorbals volunteers have been invited to celebrate the hard work and achievements of their volunteering in the community, from clearing up the streets to feeding the community and much more besides.
Local residents Przemek and Zsanett volunteer on a number of groups, including at the monthly Community Litter Pick, they said: “Glasgow is a lovely city but unfortunately it does have a litter issue. Removing trash deposited across the neighbourhood is our attempt at making the area nicer. It’s been great to see other volunteers being as passionate about this as we are. Together we can make a difference!”
The lunch falls on National Volunteers Week, an annual celebration of those who volunteer, which runs from 2 to 8 June 2025.

Resident Mariia Samchuk believes that when we work together, we can change the world. She added: “We are especially grateful to the New Gorbals Housing Association for the wonderful work they do - bringing people together, creating volunteer groups, and inspiring kindness and action.
“For Borys and me, this is more than just volunteering – it’s a way of life and our way of showing that we care. We hope to inspire others not to stay on the sidelines. Everyone can contribute - whether it’s an hour of litter picking or joining a community meeting.
“When we unite our efforts, we truly can make the world a better place. Join us!”
NGHA offers various volunteering opportunities for local tenants and residents, from joining the Association’s work in the form of Tenant’s Panel or Management Committee to community meals and litter picking events which benefit the whole Gorbals community.
The association provides volunteering mentoring and support, giving people the tools and knowledge to volunteer with confidence in the community.
NGHA’s community co-ordinator, Michael Fullerton, said: “We wanted to use the opportunity of Volunteers Week to give thanks to all those who give up their time and efforts to work with the Association to better the whole Gorbals community.
“We are extremely fortunate to have such a caring local community who actively participate and make vital contributions not only to the work of the Association, but to the area in general. We are delighted to be able to recognise this at today’s lunch.”
