The Net Zero and Climate Change Strategy 2025–2030 received high‑level endorsement from Scotland’s First Minister, John Swinney, who recently visited Hillcrest to recognise the organisation’s leadership in tackling the climate emergency and supporting a Just Transition.

The First Minister praised Hillcrest’s commitment, stating that the organisation’s approach demonstrates how housing and care providers can deliver meaningful climate action while protecting communities and ensuring fairness.

Key actions in the strategy include:

• Upgrading existing homes to meet modern energy efficiency standards.
• Designing new homes with a ‘Fabric First’ approach, prioritising insulation and energy performance.
• Exploring low‑carbon heating alternatives to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
• Supporting national goals for emissions reduction, nature restoration, and sustainable transport.

To ensure delivery, Hillcrest has established a Net Zero Delivery Group, chaired by chief executive John Alexander, bringing together senior leaders to oversee progress and champion sustainable solutions.

Endorsing the new strategy, Scotland’s First Minister said: “Hillcrest’s Net Zero and Climate Change Strategy is an excellent example of the leadership we need across Scotland as we work towards a fair and prosperous net zero future.

“By putting people, communities, and sustainability at the heart of their plans, Hillcrest is showing how the transition to net zero can be both ambitious and inclusive.

“Their commitment to improving energy efficiency, reducing emissions, and supporting those they serve reflects the very best of Scotland’s approach to climate action.

“I welcome this strategy and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will deliver for households and communities across the country.”
