Position: Education and Training Officer

Remuneration and benefits:

• £27,000-£30,000 per annum (pro-rata based on weekly hours)
• 14% employer pension contribution
• 35 paid holidays (pro-rata based on hours)
• Flexible working arrangements

Contract length and hours:

• Part-time (21hrs or 28hrs)
• Permanent contract
• 9am-5pm, with very occasional evening or weekend work

Location: Home-based remote working, with occasional travel throughout Scotland

ABOUT UNDER ONE ROOF

Under One Roof is Scotland’s only charity dedicated to providing free and impartial information to the more than half a million tenement flat owners, and housing professionals, on issues related to tenement maintenance, common repair management, and retrofit.

The charity annually organises more than 60 free online and in-person events for owner-occupiers and landlords throughout Scotland on a variety of issues including how to set-up an owners’ association, the best way to manage building repair and retrofit projects, and how to address damp and mould.

Under One Roof also provides training for property managers, housing officers, and other housing professionals, and conducts research and advocates for legislative change to better help owners address building disrepair and improve energy efficiency.

We empower flat owners and property professionals to improve the condition and sustainability of tenement buildings in Scotland through education and advocacy.

THE ROLE

Under One Roof is looking for someone from a housing, third sector, or similar background whose skills complement the existing Education and Training Officer, Communication and Engagement Officer, and Chief Executive in expanding the organisation’s impact with tenement flat owners and the wider housing sector.

The successful candidate will receive training and support to become one of Scotland’s few experts on tenement repair management, maintenance, and retrofit. This expertise will primarily be used to inform owner-occupiers, landlords, and other housing professionals in three ways:

• arranging and presenting webinars and in-person events throughout Scotland;
• answering enquiries submitted via our “Ask a Tenement Expert” website submission form;
• leading training sessions for housing professionals.

You will make a real difference in the lives of tenement owners, and the wider Scottish public, through your educational efforts encouraging tenement maintenance and related work, such as housing’s crucial role in addressing the climate emergency.

The level of stakeholder engagement and public contact associated with this role will appeal to a candidate who enjoys meeting people from all backgrounds, and building networks within Scotland’s housing and retrofit sector.

The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to assist with activities not traditionally associated with education and training roles, such as policy and research.

Given the home-based/remote nature of the position, it is essential for any candidate seeking the role to be self-motivated and enthusiastic about improving tenement repair management and maintenance in Scotland.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ROLE

Training and education

• Organise and run in-person events and webinars on subjects related to common repair management, maintenance, and retrofit of tenement flats;
• Develop and deliver fee-generating training programs with landlords, government, third-sector, housing professionals, and commercial organisations;
• Work with the team to develop new projects focused on issues connected to tenement management and maintenance.

Information and advice

• Answer queries submitted via the “Ask a Tenement Expert” service and other communication channels;
• Assist with internal training to ensure staff can increase their knowledge and skills in subjects relevant to Under One Roof’s work.

Content and resource development

• Work with the Communications and Engagement Officer to improve existing content on website and other platforms;
• Develop new content for the communication platforms of Under One Roof and partner organisations;
• Assist with research projects.

Other responsibilities

• Represent Under One Roof at external and online events;
• Contribute to idea generation, planning, and development of Under One Roof to meet the needs of tenement flat owners and those that work and support them;
• Assist the Chief Executive in performing strategic, IT, administrative and other operational duties.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential criteria

1. Understanding of the barriers flat owners face related to common repair, maintenance, and retrofit.
2. Experience working in the housing or third sector, or relevant educational degree
3. Experience of delivering training or educational presentations
4. Experience in assisting members of the public solve problems
5. Excellent written and oral communication skills
6. Experience in taking on tasks outside their traditional job remit
7. Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with others in similar roles
8. Commitment to improving housing in Scotland and promoting the vision, mission, and aims of Under One Roof

Desirable criteria

1. Experience in frequently hosting in-person and/or online events with the public
2. Experience working for local authority housing teams, housing associations, property factors, or other organisations that regularly interact with tenement flat owners
