Masterplan aims to revive Glasgow’s historic North Laurieston district

A long‑neglected corner of Glasgow’s south bank could be set for a major revival as a draft masterplan proposes using statutory powers to save heritage buildings and reshape North Laurieston into a connected, liveable urban district.

Developed jointly by Glasgow City Council and New Gorbals Housing Association, with Elder & Cannon Architects as lead consultants, the draft North Laurieston Masterplan is preparing to enter public consultation. The document builds on wider development frameworks for the city centre and the south Clyde corridor, aiming to repair the fragmented urban grain and re‑densify the area while respecting its cultural and historic character.

The vision looks across short, medium and long‑term horizons, positioning North Laurieston as a strategically important link between the city centre, Tradeston, the New Gorbals and the wider Laurieston neighbourhood. The masterplan emphasises reconnecting these areas and capitalising on planned improvements to the waterfront, particularly between Eglinton Street and Gorbals Street.

A key focus is the retention and repurposing of surviving heritage assets, alongside bringing vacant buildings back into productive use. The proposals also highlight opportunities to improve the quality and attractiveness of local streets and public spaces, helping to create a more welcoming and coherent urban environment.

A second‑stage consultation document describes North Laurieston as “currently the missing piece of the regeneration jigsaw”, noting that while the area may appear forgotten, it is “imbued with social, cultural and historical significance” that should underpin its renewal. The masterplan seeks to plug the district back into the momentum of nearby regeneration projects, including the recently completed phases of Laurieston and the Buchanan Wharf development.

New Gorbals Housing Association, working with the council and a multidisciplinary design team including Kevin Murray Associates, CDP and Stantec, intends to use the masterplan to guide future development and investment. By reactivating vacant land, delivering new homes and strengthening connections to the riverfront and city centre, the partners aim to restore North Laurieston as a thriving urban neighbourhood.
