Plans lodged to replace derelict East Kilbride church with affordable flats
A long‑derelict church site in East Kilbride is set for redevelopment, with plans submitted to deliver 36 new social rented apartments for East Kilbride Housing Association.
Wilson Developments Ltd, working with Haus Collective, has lodged an application to demolish the former South Parish Church at Baird Hill, which has remained in disrepair since its closure in January 2024 due to significant building condition issues.
The proposal sets out a pavilion‑style arrangement of two four‑storey apartment blocks, providing a mix of one and two‑bedroom homes designed to meet the housing association’s requirements and built in line with Housing for Varying Needs standards. This ensures the properties are adaptable over the lifetime of residents.
The twin blocks are arranged to face one another across a shared courtyard and parking area, with no defined front or rear, a layout intended to improve accessibility, enhance privacy from the street and create a more welcoming internal environment.
The development aims to deliver a “high‑quality” place to live, with features including landscaped amenity space at ground level, secure cycle storage for all residents, 38 car parking spaces and a softer, more permeable street edge created by the two‑block composition.
In its design narrative, Haus Collective said the scheme “seeks to promote contrast from the traditional approach, creating a dynamic visual relationship between two blocks… allowing for engaging landscaped spaces that unify the proposal”.
The project has been designed in accordance with National Planning Framework 4 and the South Lanarkshire Local Development Plan, with the site identified as suitable for residential use.
Located close to East Kilbride Shopping Centre and well served by public transport, the site is considered highly accessible for new affordable housing.
